Mike Nicholson

Mike Nicholson - Principal

A Master Mariner, Pilot; and one of only a handful of certificated Harbour Master's, possessing widespread knowledge of all aspects of Shipping and especially Harbour Operations and Management.

Experience
After 15 years at sea on a wide variety of vessel types & latterly as Master, Mike came ashore as Pilot, before progressing to Harbour Master/Pilot in a small port, then Harbour Master in a large port, where he ran an ISPO (International Standards for Pilotage Operations) accredited service. The first in the world in an “employed pilot” port.
At both Ports where he was Harbour Master he introduced acclaimed Port Marine Safety Code compliant Safety Management Systems.

Mike has significant experience in Port Security, introducing ISPS security to two port authorities, and also setting up a Port-Wide Security Authority. 

A past executive committee member of the United Kingdom Harbour Master’s Association; he also set up and chaired the North East Ports Marine Group. Mike is also one of the Newcastle Trinity House younger brethren.

As well as Port Marine Safety Code and Pilotage expertise, Mike has significant experience in; mooring analysis & mooring systems, planning of large and heavy load-outs, risk management including emergency and contingency planning, fleet /trade analysis, and pollution response.
