The number of mooring failures and ship "breakaways" is increasing, as are the financial (and sometimes human) consequences.

Some blame global warming and increasingly violent storms, but the main reason is that ships are getting bigger and the port infrastructure is not keeping pace with sizes the size of ships. Bollards are all too often not strong enough, badly positioned or of obsolete designs. The consequence is a ship parting company with the quay and usually a large insurance claim.

When was the last time your berths were assessed against the types and sizes of ships visiting?

Undoubtedly draft, length, beam and air draft were considered; maybe fendering; but what about the bollards.

What about your bollard inspection regime, do you have one, are records kept, how thorough are the checks. How about testing, have they been tested since installation if at all?

Shipmove can, with their associates offer the full service, including

  • Assessing the adequacy of the entire berth restraining capacity against present or anticipated vessels;
  • Arranging for inspection and testing of bollards
  • Proposing an ongoing inspection and testing regime
  • Providing an application to assess the berth & bollard adequacy for visiting ships

  • Providing mooring or operational staff with guidance on adequate moorings on a ship by ship basis so that Managers / Masters can be given assurance.

  • Using OPTIMOOR industry standard software, provide dedicated mooring plans for individual vessels, or conduct post failure analysis.

  • And of course there is Shipmove's innovative, simple and cost effective Mooring App
